Ford is rebooting the F-150 Lightning as an EREV with a gas generator

Tuesday, December 16, 2025 -Ford has announced plans to reboot the F-150 Lightning as an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), incorporating a gas generator to extend driving range and address “range anxiety” concerns.

The move comes as consumer demand for versatile electric trucks grows, particularly among users who rely on their vehicles for long-haul work or rural travel where charging infrastructure remains limited.

Automotive analysts say the integration of a gas generator allows the Lightning to combine the environmental benefits of an EV with the practical reliability of a hybrid system.

Ford’s approach reflects a broader industry trend toward flexible electric solutions that meet both consumer expectations and real-world usage requirements. Early prototypes suggest strong performance metrics, with the EREV variant expected to retain the Lightning’s signature towing and payload capabilities.

For buyers, the reboot signals expanded options in the electric pickup market, balancing sustainability with convenience.

Competitors are likely to respond with similar hybrid-electric innovations, marking a new phase in the evolution of work-focused EVs and reinforcing the growing relevance of flexible, extended-range electric technology in mainstream automotive markets.
