Monday, December 29, 2025 -Egypt has urgently called for an emergency session of the African Union Peace and Security Council to coordinate a response to Israel’s recent recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland. 

Egyptian officials argue the move undermines regional stability and violates established principles of international law, including respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cairo is pressing African states to take a unified stance against what it views as a destabilizing unilateral action in the Horn of Africa.

The call comes amid growing regional and international concern. Somalia’s government has strongly condemned the recognition, describing it as a direct challenge to its sovereignty. 

Critics warn that endorsing Somaliland could encourage similar separatist movements elsewhere on the continent, increasing political fragmentation and security risks at a time when the region is already facing significant instability.

Egypt’s push for an emergency session is aimed at reinforcing collective African opposition and reaffirming support for Somalia’s unity.
