DHS confirms first pediatric respiratory illness-associated deaths

Saturday, December 20, 2025 -The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has confirmed the first pediatric respiratory illness–associated deaths of the 2025–26 season. Two children have died from severe respiratory infections, one linked to COVID-19 and the other to influenza.

Health officials report that respiratory illness activity is rising statewide, based on emergency department visits, laboratory testing, and wastewater monitoring, indicating an urgent and growing public health concern.

State health experts emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent severe illness and death. DHS officials stress that it is not too late for individuals aged six months and older to receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines, noting that vaccines are safe, effective, and critical in reducing hospitalizations.

Parents and caregivers are being urged to act quickly, as lower vaccination rates may increase risks for children and other vulnerable populations.

In addition to vaccination, DHS is reinforcing basic prevention measures such as frequent handwashing, staying home when sick, and covering coughs and sneezes.

With the first pediatric deaths of the season now confirmed, health authorities are calling for immediate action to limit further spread and protect communities. The message is clear: proactive prevention now can save lives as respiratory illnesses continue to surge.
