Brown University shooting: Two dead and eight in critical condition as suspect remains at large

Monday, December 15, 2025 -The Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island, was rocked by a mass shooting on Saturday afternoon, resulting in two confirmed fatalities and eight others in critical condition following gunfire inside the Barus & Holley engineering building during the school’s final exam period. 

Authorities report that the shooter remains at large, with law enforcement continuing an aggressive search as streets and parts of campus stay under heavy police presence. Brown University issued emergency alerts urging shelter-in-place and heightened vigilance across the area while students, faculty, and nearby residents remain on edge.

Officials confirmed that multiple victims were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where medical teams are working around the clock to treat those critically wounded. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley described the situation as dire and called for community support for the families impacted by the tragedy. 

The university has not released the identities of the victims but confirmed that at least two of the deceased were students, expressing deep sorrow over the devastating loss of life on campus.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement is actively pursuing leads to locate the shooter, who was last described as a male wearing dark clothing seen exiting the building toward Hope Street. 

Federal and local agencies have joined the search and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The community remains in shock, with growing calls for immediate action on campus safety and expanded support systems for students and staff affected by the incident.
