Belarus frees 123 prisoners as US lifts sanctions

Sunday, December 14, 2025 -
Belarus has released 123 prisoners following a decision by the United States to lift certain sanctions, marking a notable shift in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The prisoners, many of whom were detained for political reasons, were freed as part of a broader effort to ease tensions and encourage dialogue on human rights and governance.

U.S. officials emphasized that the sanction relief is contingent on continued progress in Belarus, including respect for civil liberties and transparent legal processes.

The move is seen as a calculated step to incentivize further reforms while maintaining leverage over Minsk on key issues, including regional security and political freedoms.

Observers note that the prisoner release could reshape Belarus’s international standing, potentially opening the door for renewed economic engagement and diplomatic cooperation.

However, human rights advocates caution that sustained monitoring will be critical to ensure that these steps represent meaningful change rather than temporary concessions.
