Australia launches nationwide gun buyback in wake of Bondi Beach attack

Saturday, December 20, 2025 -Australia has announced a major national gun buyback scheme in direct response to the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead during a public celebration. 

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the government will introduce legislation to compensate owners who surrender surplus, newly banned, and illegal firearms, with costs shared between federal and state governments. Authorities expect hundreds of thousands of firearms to be removed from circulation as part of an urgent push to reduce gun-related risks nationwide.

The buyback is being rolled out alongside tighter firearm regulations and broader safety measures. New South Wales is moving to restrict the number of guns individuals can own, reduce magazine capacities, and tighten access to specific weapon categories. 

At the national level, leaders are increasing funding for law enforcement units focused on violent extremism and strengthening laws addressing hate-driven violence, signaling a coordinated, multi-layered response rather than a single-policy fix.

For communities, businesses, and public institutions, this marks a critical moment for safety and stability. The government says the program is designed to immediately lower the presence of dangerous weapons while restoring public confidence in shared spaces.
