At least six people injured and 100 evacuated after Italy cable car crash

Tuesday, December 30, 2025 -A cable car accident in northern Italy’s Piedmont region has left at least six people injured and forced the evacuation of around 100 others, authorities said.

The crash occurred near the mountain village of Macugnaga when two cable car cabins collided with the upper and lower stations during routine operations, leaving dozens of passengers stranded at high altitude.

Emergency teams, including the Civil Alpine Rescue Service, police, firefighters, and helicopter crews, responded quickly to the scene. Many of those evacuated were tourists and skiers who had been on the mountain at the time of the incident.

Local officials emphasized that none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, with most victims treated for minor wounds such as grazes and bruises.

Preliminary reports suggest a technical issue may have caused one of the cabins to fail to slow as expected when approaching a station barrier, resulting in the collision.

The cable car system was immediately shut down for inspection, and nearby ski slopes were closed as a safety precaution. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the malfunction and oversee the safe return of all evacuees to lower ground.
