3 people with minor injuries, suspected gunman dead after shooting at Idaho sheriff's office, authorities say

Sunday, December 28, 2025 -A shooting at the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in Wallace, Idaho has left three people with minor injuries and the suspected gunman dead following a tense law‑enforcement response on Friday afternoon, authorities confirmed.

Shoshone County Sheriff William Eddy said the incident began around 2:30 p.m. local time when a gunman opened fire outside the sheriff’s office, striking two women in a vehicle. A law‑enforcement officer was later grazed by gunfire inside the office lobby, but all victims were reported to have only minor injuries and were treated at area hospitals.

According to officials, the suspect — later identified as 77‑year‑old John Drake — entered the building after firing outside, continued shooting toward the dispatch area, and subsequently barricaded himself inside.

Multiple local and federal agencies responded to the active‑shooter situation, and officers ultimately engaged and shot the suspect during an extended standoff. Drake was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and Idaho State Police are handling the investigation into the officer‑involved shooting, while other agencies assist with the criminal case.

Sheriff Eddy described the event as significant for the small community of Wallace and thanked all responding partners for their swift action. As the situation continues to be reviewed, local officials are urging residents to stay informed but assured that the area is now safe.
