“Wake up dead man” is the best “knives out” movie yet

The newest entry in the franchise, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, directed by Rian Johnson, delivers perhaps the richest, most satisfying installment in the series so far.

Critics are calling it the best yet — with sharp praise for how the film deepens the emotional stakes, leans into darker themes, and still delivers the sly wit and mystery tension that made the original hits.

What sets Wake Up Dead Man apart is its balance of tone: it’s darker and more introspective than its predecessors, but it’s also full of life and laughter. The murder mystery unfolds within a tight‑knit church community, imbued with faith, moral conflict, and unexpected humanity.

This gives the film emotional weight beyond the usual “whodunit,” yet the humor, ensemble cast energy, and clever plotting keep it fun and thrilling throughout.

Finally, standout performances — especially from Josh O'Connor as the conflicted priest at the center of the case, plus the return of Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc — elevate the film into something more than just another sequel.

Its mix of mystery, character depth, humor, and thematic boldness makes it feel fresh, resonant, and arguably the most complete “Knives Out” film to date.
