Two dozens House Democrats vote with Republicans to rebuke one of their members
Wednesday, November 19, 2025-Nearly two dozen House Democrats broke ranks with their party and joined Republicans to pass a resolution rebuking Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García of Illinois.
The move was spearheaded by fellow Democrat Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who accused García of manipulating his retirement timing to handpick his successor — his own chief of staff.
The resolution passed 236–186, with 23 Democrats voting in favor and another three voting “present.” Many in the party expressed deep discomfort: Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other top Democrats publicly opposed the rebuke, calling it a misstep that could set a dangerous precedent.
The controversy hinges on García’s retirement announcement, which came just after Illinois’ filing deadline. That timing effectively blocked most challengers and cleared the way for his handpicked chief of staff to run unopposed in the primary. Critics argue it undermines democratic norms; supporters of the rebuke say it’s a necessary defense of election integrity.
