TRUMP opens the door to Obamacare subsidy extension

Wednesday, November 26, 2025 -
President Donald Trump has indicated he may be open to a short-term extension of enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare — subsidies that are set to expire at the end of the year.

While Trump has long criticized the ACA as “unaffordable,” he told reporters recently that “some kind of an extension may be necessary to get something else done.” He floated directing federal funds from insurers to individuals via health‑savings accounts (HSAs), letting individuals purchase insurance on their own.

That said, Trump rejected a proposed two‑year extension of the subsidies — saying he’d “rather not extend them at all.” Still, by leaving the door open to a narrower extension or a revised aid plan, his remarks could shape how Congress addresses the looming subsidy expiration and rising premiums.
