Paris prosecutor says arrested man is thought to be 4th member of Louvre heist gang

Sunday, November 30, 2025 -
French police have arrested a 39‑year‑old man earlier this week who is believed to be the fourth member of the group that stole France’s crown jewels from the Louvre Museum in a daring heist, prosecutors said.

He has a criminal record with six prior convictions and is now facing preliminary charges of robbery by an organised gang and criminal conspiracy — crimes punishable by up to 15 years and 10 years in jail respectively.

That arrest means authorities now believe all four members of the robbery team are in custody. Investigators have not yet specified the exact role the newly arrested man played in the Oct. 19 heist.

The daylight robbery reportedly involved a four‑person commando: two individuals entered the museum’s ornate Apollo Gallery — using a freight lift and angle grinders to break into display cases — while two accomplices acted as lookouts or getaway associates.

The loot — valued at an estimated €88 million (about $102 million), excluding their enormous historical value — remains missing. The stolen items include imperial jewels: a diamond‑and‑emerald necklace once given by Napoleon Bonaparte to his wife Empress Marie‑Louise, and a tiara and crown connected to 19th‑century French royalty.

As the investigation continues, authorities are intensifying scrutiny of the security failures at the museum that allowed the robbery to happen.
