Famine spreads to two more areas in Sudan

Tuesday, October 4, 2025-Famine has officially spread to El Fasher in Darfur and Kadugli in South Kordofan, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a leading global authority on hunger.

Months of ongoing conflict, displacement, and disrupted supply chains have left approximately 375,000 people in famine across these regions, while another 6.3 million nationwide face extreme hunger. The crisis has intensified as food access continues to be blocked in conflict zones.

Residents and aid workers report alarming conditions, including widespread malnutrition, especially among children, and families forced to eat animal fodder to survive. Humanitarian access remains limited, leaving communities feeling abandoned. Aid organizations warn that the deliberate obstruction of supply routes by armed groups has worsened the situation.

Without urgent intervention, the famine could spread further, deepening the humanitarian crisis. Analysts caution that prolonged food shortages could result in irreversible child malnutrition, collapse of local economies, and increased regional instability as displaced populations strain neighboring areas. International support and rapid relief efforts are crucial to prevent the crisis from worsening.
