Friday, November 7, 2025 -China’s most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has entered service shortly after a grand commissioning ceremony presided over by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, state media announced.
The Fujian, the nation’s third warship, is equipped with electromagnetic catapults that will enable aircraft to be launched at enhanced velocities. Its launch represents a significant advancement for Beijing, which now boasts the world’s largest navy in terms of the total number of vessels.
Under Xi Jinping’s leadership, China has been expanding its navy at an accelerated pace, placing pressure on the United States and its allies to maintain their pace. The Fujian possesses the capability to launch three distinct types of aircraft utilizing its electromagnetic catapult and flat flight deck, as reported by state media.
The domestically-built vessel can accommodate aircraft equipped with heavier weaponry and fuel loads, enabling them to strike enemy targets from a greater distance. Consequently, it possesses enhanced capabilities compared to China’s initial two carriers, the Liaoning and the Shandong, both of which were constructed by the Russian Federation.
State media celebrated Fujian as a “pivotal milestone” in the development of China’s navy. The United States is the sole other nation globally that possesses an aircraft carrier utilizing the same electromagnetic catapult system as the Fujian. The commissioning ceremony was held in southern Hainan province on Wednesday, during which Xi Jinping conducted a tour of the ship’s deck to gain further insights into its performance at sea.
State media asserted that Xi Jinping personally made the decision to adopt electromagnetic catapult technology.Furthermore, the reports indicated that Xi Jinping engaged in a conversation with sailors who lined up along the flight deck and dock, exchanging salutes and exclamations in unison: “Adhere to the party’s directives, strive for victory, and uphold exemplary conduct!”
