Beijing freezes Japan youth exchange programmes over TAKAICHI Taiwan row

Saturday, November 29, 2025 -Beijing has frozen its youth exchange programmes with Japan as tensions spike over comments linked to the Takaichi–Taiwan dispute. 

The move marks a sharp diplomatic reaction, signaling that China is willing to leverage people-to-people initiatives—traditionally seen as softer, stabilizing channels—in response to political friction. By halting youth exchanges, Beijing is sending a message that even cultural and educational ties are not immune to geopolitical red lines.

The freeze comes at a sensitive moment for regional diplomacy. Youth exchanges have long played a stabilizing role in Sino-Japanese relations, offering rare ground-level engagement even when political rhetoric hardens.
