BBC apologises to TRUMP over Panorama edit — but rejects $1 billion compensation

Friday, November 14, 2025 -The BBC has issued a formal apology to Donald Trump for misleadingly editing his 6 January 2021 speech in a Panorama documentary.

According to the broadcaster, the edit created the false impression that Trump had made a continuous call to violent action. In reality, the clips came from different parts of the speech.

Despite acknowledging the mistake, the BBC says it will not pay the $1 billion Trump demanded. The broadcaster argues there is no legal basis for a defamation claim, stressing that the edit was an “error of judgment” rather than a malicious distortion.

As part of the apology, BBC Chair Samir Shah personally wrote to the White House, and the corporation confirmed it will not rebroadcast the episode in its current form.
