Bangladesh’s ousted PM SHEIKH HASINA sentenced to death over 2024 student crackdown
Tuesday, November 18, 2025 -A Dhaka tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia, declaring her guilty of “crimes against humanity” for ordering a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising in July–August 2024. The verdict stems from accusations that she authorized the use of drones, helicopters, and lethal force against protestors, leading to a horrific toll.
Authorities report that more than 800 people were killed during the unrest, while a U.N. report suggests the death count may have reached 1,400. Hasina, 78, fled to India last year and was tried in her absence. In addition to the death sentence, she also received a life sentence on separate charges for crimes against humanity.
Hasina has strongly rejected the tribunal’s ruling, calling it “biased and politically motivated.” Her supporters, including her son Sajeeb Wazed, have vowed to resist the judgment, though they have also said they will not appeal unless the Awami League is permitted to participate politically under a democratically elected government.
Tight security now surrounds the tribunal as the country braces for possible unrest and rising political tensions.
The sentencing marks one of the most dramatic turns in Bangladesh’s recent political crisis. With the country preparing for upcoming elections, both supporters and opponents of the former prime minister are mobilizing, raising fears of fresh violence.
Officials warn that the fallout may intensify in the coming weeks as domestic and international observers scrutinize the legitimacy, stability, and direction of Bangladesh's political future.
