Tuesday, October 14, 2025 - A heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded in Mandinyenya Village, Bikita, Masvingo, where a four-year-old girl, identified as Sabina Maziva, was poisoned and later died following a quarrel between neighbours over goats that had strayed into a field.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of
three suspects in connection with the child’s death. Those in custody have been
identified as 60-year-old Violet Gamera, 60-year-old Chamunorwa Kwanga, and
30-year-old Regina Tavengerarwei.
In a statement released on 12 October 2025, Police
Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi described the case as one of
the most disturbing incidents reported in recent months.
“Initial investigations show that on 1st October, the child
was given poisoned rice by the suspect. She later began vomiting and was taken
to a local clinic where she was attended to. Unfortunately, her condition
worsened, and she died on 5th October 2025,” said Nyathi.
The poisoning allegedly stemmed from a feud after goats
belonging to Sabina’s parents damaged crops in Gamera’s field. Gamera is
accused of lacing rice with poison and giving it to the child in retaliation.
Following the girl’s death and burial on 8 October,
suspicions from villagers led to the matter being reported to Chief Ziki, who
directed Sabina’s mother to notify the police. During questioning, Gamera
reportedly implicated the two other suspects, claiming that Kwanga advised
her to poison the girl, while Tavengerarwei supplied the toxic substance.
Police have since recovered rat poison and a liquid believed
to be a cotton pesticide, both suspected to have been used in the crime. The
child’s body was exhumed and taken to Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary for a
post-mortem examination.
Condemning the act, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi urged
community members to resolve disputes without resorting to violence or harm.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police strongly condemn criminal acts and cruelty in
society, especially those that endanger the lives of innocent children. We urge
members of the public to resolve disputes through lawful and peaceful means,”
he said.
