News outlets reject Pentagon’s new press rules

Wednesday, October 15, 2025-Major news organizations are uniting in rare agreement, rejecting a new set of Pentagon press regulations they say threaten transparency and press freedom.

The updated rules would tighten restrictions on how journalists access defense officials and limit questions during briefings. Pentagon officials defend the move as an effort to “streamline communication,” but critics warn it’s a quiet step toward secrecy.

The backlash was immediate. Outlets including The Associated Press, Reuters, and major TV networks jointly protested the changes, calling them “an unacceptable barrier to accountability.”

Editors and correspondents argued that wartime information, military spending, and global operations cannot be responsibly covered under such constraints. On social media, reporters shared personal accounts of growing obstacles in covering defense issues.

This standoff could reshape the delicate relationship between the military and the press. If the Pentagon doesn’t reverse course, the public’s right to know may shrink under the guise of efficiency.
