Wednesday, October 15, 2025-An elite military unit in Madagascar has announced it has seized power from President Andry Rajoelina, claiming the government has “failed the nation.”
The group declared on national radio that it has dissolved key state institutions and promised new elections “when stability is restored.” Rajoelina’s whereabouts remain uncertain, fueling speculation that the coup may still face resistance from loyalist forces.
The development has thrown the island nation into turmoil. Crowds gathered in the capital, some celebrating the takeover while others protested what they called an attack on democracy.
The African Union and United Nations have condemned the power grab, warning that instability could deepen the country’s economic and humanitarian crises. Regional leaders are now scrambling to mediate before violence escalates.
Madagascar’s fragile democracy has long teetered between hope and upheaval. If the coup succeeds, it could redraw alliances across the Indian Ocean region and test Africa’s capacity to respond to yet another military takeover.
