Wednesday, October 1, 2025 - A Grade Seven pupil in Norton, Zimbabwe, was k!lled on Tuesday, September 30, after being mauled by dogs, just days before she was scheduled to sit for her final primary school examinations.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi,
confirmed the attack to ZBC, saying that investigations were already underway.
This marks the second fatal dog attack in Mashonaland West
Province in recent months. In July, a nine-year-old boy was also mauled to
death by dogs while playing with friends at Bonvalley Farm in Darwendale,
Zvimba District. ZRP provincial spokesperson for Mashonaland West, Inspector
Ian Kohwera, said at the time:
“A nine-year-old boy was bitten to death by dogs at
Bonvalley Farm, Darwendale, while he was playing with other children.” Police
say investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
Following the rise in fatal dog attacks, the ZRP announced a
nationwide operation targeting irresponsible dog owners who allow their animals
to roam unsupervised. The crackdown is being conducted in collaboration with
the SPCA and local authorities.
The police also reminded the public of the Harare Dog
Licensing and Control By-Law of 1993, which requires owners to leash and
control their dogs at all times. In a statement issued on September 19, 2025,
the ZRP said:
“The ZRP reminds dog owners to keep their dogs on leash and
ensure that dogs do not roam on the streets unsupervised in accordance with the
country’s laws, especially the Harare Dog Licensing and Control By-Law of 1993.
Dog owners should prioritize the safety of others. The ZRP is now engaging SPCA
and local authorities for an operation targeting stray dogs and owners who
allow their dogs to roam the streets and in the process attack members of the
public.”
