Three Britons among 16 dead in Lisbon funicular crash

Saturday, September 6, 2025 -Authorities in Portugal have confirmed that three British nationals are among the 16 people killed after a funicular derailment in Lisbon turned into one of the country’s worst transport disasters in recent memory.

The historic streetcar, popular with tourists and locals alike, came off the tracks and crashed on a steep descent, leaving dozens more injured. Emergency services worked through the night in the heart of the city as officials launched an investigation into what caused the accident.

News of the tragedy has sparked shock both in Portugal and abroad, with tributes pouring in for the victims. British officials said they were working closely with Portuguese authorities to support the families of those who lost loved ones.

Locals in Lisbon held a candlelit vigil near the crash site, reflecting the sense of grief in a city where the iconic funiculars have long symbolized tradition and resilience.

Attention now turns to the safety of Lisbon’s public transport system, which is both a lifeline for residents and a major draw for millions of tourists each year. Experts have already raised questions about the maintenance of the century-old carriages and tracks, while Portuguese leaders face pressure to reassure the public.

The tragedy is expected to prompt urgent reviews of safety protocols as the country grapples with mourning and accountability in equal measure.
