Thursday, September 11, 2025 -Poland announced that it has formally invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty after what officials described as an “unprecedented violation” of its airspace by Russian drones.
The incident, which occurred overnight, saw multiple drones cross into Polish territory while en route to targets in western Ukraine. Polish air defenses shot several down, but others reportedly crashed inside its borders, escalating tensions in the region and raising fears of direct conflict between NATO and Russia.
The decision to invoke Article 4 means Warsaw is calling for urgent consultations with all NATO allies, citing the threat to its territorial integrity and security. The move was backed by several Baltic states, which have warned for months that Russia’s war in Ukraine could spill across borders.
