Belgium urges transparent investigation into strike on Global Sumud Flotilla

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 -On Tuesday, Belgium strongly urged a comprehensive and transparent investigation into a strike on the Global Sumud Flotilla in Tunis. The Belgian Foreign Minister, Maxime Prevot, emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring the safety of the crew members on board.

Prevot expressed his concern on the US social media platform X, stating that Brussels remains vigilant regarding the developments surrounding the flotilla. He acknowledged the humanitarian objectives of the flotilla and underscored the continued pursuit of humanitarian access through diplomatic channels.

However, Prevot also noted that access to the Gaza Strip is currently prohibited. Consequently, civil initiatives to reach the blockaded Palestinian enclave must be carefully evaluated to mitigate potential risks.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, named after the Arabic term for “steadfastness,” comprises over 50 vessels that transport individuals from diverse countries. Among the participants are medical professionals, journalists, and activists. Approximately 150 individuals, including Tunisians, Turks, and representatives from Europe, Africa, and Asia, are actively involved in this initiative.

The flotilla departed from Barcelona in late August, accompanied by another group from Genoa, Italy. It is anticipated to depart from Tunisia on Wednesday for Gaza. The initiative seeks to challenge Israel’s blockade and provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
